We are located in the Heart of Yamhill County and Oregon Wine Country about 40 minutes Southwest of Portland, and 40 minutes North of Salem.

There is easy, free on-street parking available immediately adjacent to the museum property.

Explore the Historic House and Learn About

The orphaned Herbert Hoover’s childhood in Oregon with his uncle, Dr. John Henry Minthorn. Herbert Hoover was the 31st President of the United States, and he is well-known for his successful humanitarian and relief efforts during World War I and World War II. Young Herbert “Bertie” Hoover moved to Oregon at age 11 in 1885.

Herbert Hoover’s relationship with Natives including his childhood relationships with Osage Indian children in Iowa and Oklahoma, and his Vice President, Charles Curtis, member of the Kaw Nation.

Minthorn’s role as Superintendent of The Forest Grove Industrial Indian Training School from 1883-1884.

Minthorn’s enterprises/ventures including his role as a 19th-century rural and family doctor, his promotion of thermal spas and tinctures for health benefits, and his land speculation and investment.

The lives of Dr. Minthorn’s children, including his two youngest daughters who led accomplished lives in the early 20th century. One, Gertrude, was a doctor who worked in India, Japan, Malaysia, and China, and another, Mary Agnes, who was a graduate of Columbia University and lived in Oregon, Hawaii, and Alaska.

The history of Newberg, Oregon, its founding by Quakers and the Quakers’ establishment of Friends Pacific Academy, now known as George Fox University.
